Headache is one of the most common types of pain. Almost everyone suffer from a headache at least once in their lifetime. The causes, symptoms, and interventions required for different types of headaches vary. Some headaches may be due to stress or any emotional state, such as depression, while others may be due to some other medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, migraine, etc. You can have a full headache or one side of the head or both sides.
Types of Headaches
Although there are various types of headaches, the International Headache Society has classified headaches into two primary categories.
Overactivity or problems in the head structures cause primary headaches. These structures include muscles, nerves, and blood vessels in the neck and head. It may also result due to changes in the brain’s chemical activity. Some common types of primary headaches include migraine, tension, and cluster headaches.
Secondary headaches are a result of some other conditions that trigger the pain-sensitive structures such as the nerves in the head. In simple words, these headaches are due to some other causes that stimulate the pain-sensitive head structures. There is a wide range of factors that can lead to secondary headaches; for instance, hangover after alcohol, brain tumor, stress, blood clotting, glaucoma, panic and anxiety attacks, dehydration, etc.
Causes of Headaches
There can be many different causes of headaches, depending on their type. However, some common headache causes include the following:
- Health condition or illness
- Stress or anxiety
- Lifestyle and environment
- Trauma or injury to the brain
